Mock Interviews
Newton School | October 2022
Newton School is an online ed-tech platform that sells coding courses. It mainly served users who were working in other fields and wanted to transition into tech.
About the product
Any course (full-stack development or data science) was divided into major sections— what we called "modules".
These modules contains live classes, assignments, and learning materials.
Apart from this, we had live contests and an Arena feature with more questions or the student to solve.
After completing each module, a student would unlock a mock interview which they had to clear in order to be eligible for hiring.
Problem Overview
The overarching issue we were solving in the company was making the course product-driven rather than being driven by an ops team. After removing Ops team from the process, we saw a significant drop in students scheduling mock interviews themselves. This was concerning because:
Passing mock interviews was one of the criteria to be eligible for hiring.
It was fundamental part of their practice— students who took mock interviews got hired easily and faster as compared to those that did not.
From a business POV, this was also affecting our finance— since we had hired 3rd party interviewers to do this.
Interface Problems
The platform had several issues which failed to help a student schedule a mock interview with ease.
Understanding the user
Project Goal
Increase a student's awareness on how they can schedule and give a mock interview on the platform.
Simplify the platform so a student can do this without any confusion.
